    Journal PapersStructures , Volume 27 , 2020 October 1, {Pages 163-173 }

    Abstract

    Eight one-third scale concrete columns designed based on the latest seismic provisions for Special Moment Frame systems were experimentally investigated. To do so, the specimens were subjected to lateral cyclic loading and axial loads up to 35% of the axial capacity of columns, other test variables included the concrete strength, spacing, and diameters of transverse reinforcement. Accordingly, damage states were developed accounting for the specimens and attributed to the backbone curve by which the reinforced High-Strength Concrete (HSC) columns capacity and the performance levels were represented. Moreover, the range of drift ratios and damage index limits were proposed and utilized versus the performance levels of reinforced HSC columns

    Abstract

    Most of the recent studies have improved the efficiency of FRP jackets for increasing the compressive strength, shear strength, and ductility of reinforced concrete columns; however, the influence of FRP jackets on the flexural capacity is slight. Although new methods such as NSM (near surface mounted) are utilized to solve this problem, yet practical difficulties, behavior dependency on adhesives, and brittle failure necessitate finding better methods. This paper presents the results of an experimental study on the application of fiber-reinforced polymer fastened mechanically to the concrete columns to improve the flexural capacity of RC columns. For this purpose, mechanical fasteners were used to achieve the composite behavior of FRP and

    Seismic Behavior of Studded Steel Coupling Beam Linked to RC Shear Wall

    Abstract

    Steel coupling beams are increasingly used in coupled wall systems in medium to high rise buildings for high seismic prone areas. Recent investigations focused on interactions between steel coupling beams and reinforced concrete wall in connection region. However, due to lack of data, effect of studs practically utilized in connection zone is not fully understood. Therefore, the major variable in the experimental test includes studs on beam flanges. On the other hand, the test complemented on specimen only considered one half of steel coupling beam and an individual wall, which is different from actual conditions of coupled walls. To address the gap in the previous study, the effects of this difference and concentrated transverse reinforcem

    Abstract

    Reinforced concrete shear walls are frequently used as lateral load resisting systems because of their ductile response and very good energy dissipation. When openings in RC shear walls are used due to architectural requirements, coupling beams are forming to connect two adjacent walls. The behavior of coupled shear walls is governed by coupling beams and they are the most vulnerable parts of coupled shear wall systems and were seriously damaged due to severe past earthquakes. To avoid construction difficulties and huge size of the RC coupling beams and better seismic performance an ductility, steel coupling beams in reinforced concrete shear walls have been mostly used during last years.     Journal PapersProceedings of the Institution of Civil Engineers-Structures and Buildings , 2019 June 13, {Pages 15-Jan }

    Abstract

    Reinforced concrete shear walls linked with steel coupling beams (SCBs) are an established structural solution in seismically prone regions. However, while headed studs are widely used in composite structures to facilitate load transfer, the performance of such studs in SCB connections is not very well understood. The study reported in this paper considered the effect of headed studs and details of reinforcement around the connection zone as the main parameters using experimental and numerical approaches. The results showed that the studs strengthened moment transfer rather than shear in the connection. In addition, the headed studs were subject to shear and bending moments rather than axial forces. A model of the transfer load in the conne

    Abstract

    Values of shear strength factor for joints with discontinuous column effectively confined on four and three vertical faces proposed by ACI 352R-02 Code are based on the judgment of relevant committee. Moreover, CSA A23.3-14 used the same shear strength coefficients for joints with continuous and discontinuous column. Therefore, beam-column joints tested by the authors and their colleagues were modeled numerically. Parametric study was performed to define the proper values. Results showed joint shear strength factor could be relaxed for roof wide beam-column joints effectively confined on four or three vertical faces. For CSA A23.3, it was suggested to use different coefficients for joints with continuous and discontinuous column. Values of

    Journal PapersStructural Control and Health Monitoring , Volume 26 , Issue 1, 2019 January , {Pages e2283 }

    Abstract

    One of the main challenges of hybrid simulation is developing integration methods that not only provide accurate and stable results but also are compatible with the hybrid simulation circumstances. This paper presents a novel enhanced integration technique for hybrid simulation termed “modified operator splitting” (MOS) method. The main aim of the MOS technique is to improve the precision of the operator splitting (OS) method by reducing the corrector step length, where initial stiffness is utilized instead of actual stiffness. For this purpose, a new algorithm is proposed, which makes a more precise estimation of the predictor displacement; thus minimizes the effect of the corrective procedure. As a result, a higher percentage of the

    Abstract

    This paper summarizes the development of a new replaceable horizontally steel arc-cut damper (HACD) designed as a fuse element in steel-coupling beams for earthquake protection of reinforced concrete shear walls with openings. The HACD is fabricated from a steel arc-cut plate and restraining plates positioned by vertical steel stiffeners. The proposed damper is an in situ, weld-free energy dissipater device, which eliminates the on-site installation difficulties. The seismic induced energy is dissipated through shear yielding of the arc-cut plate when the device is subjected to inelastic cyclic deformation. The optimized shape of HACD with adequate ductility and dissipation energy capacity is obtained using finite-element an

    Abstract

    One of the most important challenges exists in using of carbon fiber reinforced polymer(FRP) for strengthening of concrete members is the brittle behavior of RC members due to premature de-bonding of the layers. Mechanically fastened FRP (MF-FRP) systems are emerging as a promising method to prevent de-bonding of FRP strips and the prior brittle failure of strengthened RC members. The approach entails the use of fiber-reinforced polymer connected to the concrete substrate by means of steel anchors. In this research, a new anchor designed to delay de-bonding of FRP in reinforced concrete (RC) strengthened columns. Two reinforced concrete columns strengthened using the externally bonded conventional method and the new proposed method in compa

    Journal PapersCanadian Journal of Civil Engineering , Volume 45 , Issue 11, 2018 January , {Pages 947-957 }

    Abstract

    Past researches showed that the energy dissipation capacity of the wide beam-column joints was not sufficient. So, two full-scale reinforced concrete interior wide beam-column joints were tested under quasi-static cyclic loads and the performance of the specimens was studied experimentally and numerically. Effect of using wide beams in two directions was investigated and it became clear that the longitudinal reinforcement of transverse wide beam had significant effect on the seismic behavior of the joints. Flexural hinging mechanism in the wide beams occurred instead of torsion brittle mode of failure. Effect of eccentric beams on joints is one of the areas needing research in ACI 352R-02. In the numerical study, it was seen that damage of

    Abstract

    Traditional base isolation systems focus on isolating the seismic response of a structure in the horizontal direction. However, in regions where the vertical earthquake excitation is significant (such as near-fault region), a traditional base-isolated building exhibits a significant vertical vibration. To eliminate this shortcoming, a rocking-isolated system named Telescopic Column (TC) is proposed in this paper. Detailed rocking and isolation mechanism of the TC system is presented. The seismic performance of the TC is compared with the traditional elastomeric bearing (EB) and friction pendulum (FP) base-isolated systems. A 4-storey reinforced concrete moment-resisting frame (RC-MRF) is selected as the reference superstructure. The seismic

    Abstract

    During past decades, the use of wide beam-column RC system as a way to optimize the cost of construction has been proposed. In this context, many researchers have studied seismic behavior of wide-beam column connections. However, no researches have been carried out on the behavior of these joints when the axis of wide-beam and that of column have eccentricity relative to each other. In order to illustrate the structural performance of reinforced concrete wide beam-column connection, an experimental research was carried out to illustrate the behaviour of exterior RC wide beam-column connections when subjected to quasi-static cyclic loading. The specimen was full-scale connection. This specimen was designed in accordance with ACI-318 version

    Abstract

    Yet, the main aim of most of the seismic design codes is to design a building to ensure life safety during a design level earthquake, and hope that the performance of the building under different levels of seismic excitation would be acceptable. However, experiences exhibit that most of structures in severe earthquakes receive damages and residual displacements which prevent serviceability and, in some cases, impose repair costs higher than new construction investments. In addition, the damage resulted from earthquakes has been unacceptable to building owners due to the cost of structural and non-structural repairs. One of the methods to reduce the cost of repair and maintenance is to utilize a structural self-centering system that provide

    Abstract

    Ductility of high-strength concrete (HSC) columns with rectangular sections was assessed in this study by reviewing experimental data from the available literature. Up to 112 normal weights concrete columns with strength in the range of 50–130?MPa were considered and presented as a database. The data included the results of column testes under axial and reversed lateral loading. Displacement ductility of HSC columns was evaluated in terms of their concrete and reinforcement strengths, bar arrangement, volumetric ratio of transverse reinforcement, and axial loading. The results indicated that the confinement requirements and displacement ductility in HSC columns are more sensitive than those in normal strength concrete colum

    Abstract

    Hybrid simulation is a powerful test method for evaluating the seismic performance of structural systems. This method makes it feasible that only critical components of a structure be experimentally tested. This paper presents a newly proposed integration algorithm for seismic hybrid simulation which is aimed to extend its capabilities to a wide range of systems where existing methods encounter some limitations. In the proposed method, which is termed the variable time step (VTS) integration method, an implicit scheme is employed for hybrid simulation by eliminating the iterative phase on experimental element, the phase which is necessary in regular implicit applications. In order to study the effectiveness of the VTS method,

    Abstract

    The main goal of seismic design is to provide required safety level during earthquake, and to make a structure remain repairable. According to the available reports of recent earthquakes, structures designed using force based design procedures are not precise enough in eliminating the damage of structures. Therefore, a new generation of design codes based on the performance level design procedure is introduced. In order to estimate the amount of damage in structural elements, related criteria are defined as damage indices. Damage indices are functions of damage variables and indicate the effect of the variables on the element’s damage. Park-Ang damage index is among the most important damage indices, which shows the damage of reinforced c

    Abstract

    The advantages of buckling restrained braces (BRB) attract the researches and engineers attention to use this bracing system. High ductility, high-energy dissipation capacity and symmetric hysteresis behavior are the main advantages of this system that is the most effective system to resist the earthquake induced lateral forces. Disadvantages of conventional bracing system such as low ductility, low energy dissipating capacity and local as well as global buckling with unsymmetrical hysteresis performance in tension and compression are the main reason to rehabilitate and or replace this system with the new generation of braces. Buckling restrained brace (BRB) is an energy-dissipating member that enhances the structural stiffness, energy diss

    The main goal of seismic design is having safety while earthquake happens and making a structure repairable. For estimating the damages in the elements criterions are defined as damage indices.Damage indices are functions consist of some damage variables and show the effect of those variables on the element’s damage. One of the most important damage indices is the Park-Ang damage index. It shows the damage of reinforced concrete elements as a linear combination of maximum deformations and absorbed cyclic energy. The analytical value of this damage index for the state of not having any damage will zero and for the collapse of the element should be equal one. The Park-Ang damage index has a non-negative factor shows the reduction of element

    Journal PapersEngineering structures , Volume 111 , 2016 March 15, {Pages 333-344 }

    Abstract

    Performance of RC interior beam-column joints at roof level is defined as the area needing research by ACI 352R-02. Because of a lack of research data on performance of this type of joints, two half scale interior beam-column connections with discontinuous column were designed in accordance with ACI 318-11 and ACI 352R-02 provisions. One of the specimens had wide beams and the other had conventional beams to compare their behavior. These specimens were tested under quasi-static cyclic loading. It became clear by the experiments that roof wide beam-column joint had lower strength compared to that of roof conventional beam-column joint. Both of the specimens had almost equal energy dissipation capacity. The conventional beam-column joint reac
