Abstract

Cherry red spot is a known sign of retinal occlusive disease. However, when it occurs bilaterally in a young patient with neurological findings, a diagnosis of retinal occlusive disease becomes farfetched, and the possibility of a storage disorder is raised. We report multimodal retinal imaging findings in a case of cherry-red spot myoclonus syndrome. This form of imaging helps in the ophthalmological diagnosis and management of these patients.

Abstract

Objective: Neuroblastoma (NB) is one of the frequently observed malignant solid tumors of childhood and infancy, accounting for 15% of pediatric cancer deaths. Recently, the approach of differentiation therapy has shown considerable promise in effective treatment of NB patients. MiR-124 belongs to the nervous system-specific miRNAs that is increased during neuronal differentiation and may be one of the potential therapeutic targets for the treatment of NB. However, despite its well-established therapeutic potential, its efficient delivery to the targeted tumor cells is a challenging task. Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) are multipotent adult progenitor cells that have antitumor properties, and they can migrate to cancer cells and tumors. This

Abstract

Objective: Tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α), checkpoint inhibitors, and interleukin-17 (IL-17) are critical targets in inflammation and autoimmune diseases. Monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) have a successful portfolio in the treatment of chronic diseases. With the current progress in stem cells and gene therapy technologies, there is the promise of replacing costly mAbs production in bioreactors with a more direct and cost-effective production method inside the patient’s cells. In this paper we examine the results of an investigational assessment of secukinumab gene therapy.Materials and Methods: In this experimental study, the DNA sequence of the heavy and light chains of secukinumab antibodies were cloned in a lentiviral vector. Abstract

Objective: Platelet (PLT) storage at 4 C has several benefits, however, it is accompanied by increased clearance of PLTs after transfusion. In this study, we evaluated the potential of sodium octanoate (SO) for reducing apoptosis and clearance rate of PLTs after long-term storage in cold.Materials and Methods: In this experimental study, PLT concentrates (PCs) were stored for 5 days under the following three conditions: 20-24 C, 4 C, and 4 C in the presence of SO. To measure the viability of PLTs, the water-soluble tetrazolium salt (WST-1) assay was performed. Phosphatidylserine (PS) exposure was determined on PLTs using flow cytometry technique. The amount of human active caspase-3 was determined in PLTs using an enzyme-linked immunosorben

Abstract

Oil pollution is a great threat to all forms of aquatic and terrestrial life. Vetiver (Vetiveria zizanioides L.) is a C4 perennial grass which can grow on diverse environments and may have the potential to be used for remediation of contaminated areas. Therefore, a controlled greenhouse experiment was conducted to study growth performance, petroleum tolerance and total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPHs) removal potency of vetiver and hydrocarbon-degrading bacteria over a period of 120 days in contaminated soils with various oil concentrations (0, 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, and 12% w/w). The results showed that chlorophyll (Chl) a and Chl b content decreased in contaminated soils, although carotenoid content increased. Vetiver grass showed no sign of toxici

Abstract

Glioblastoma is the most common malignant primary brain tumor among adults and one of the most lethal cancers. It is characterized by the deregulation of signaling pathways involving proliferation, growth, survival, and other factors. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) play a role in the regulation of genes by affecting the 3′ untranslated region (UTR) of mRNA and affect many cell functions. The present study showed that miR-129 decreased the expression of retinoblastoma and p53 signaling pathways’ genes, including CDK4, CDK6, and MDM2. The real-time PCR data indicated that expression of CDK4 in?U251 and U87 cell lines declined by 69.8% and 47% (p?

Abstract

Background and purpose: Umbilical cord blood (UCB) is a source of Hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) and has received a lot of attention due to its availability, renewal capacity, proliferation rate, and differentiation potential. The main limitation of using these cells is their low quantity in one unite of UCB. To overcome this, HSCs co-culturing with UCB derived mesenchymal cells (MSCs) is a practical approach. The purpose of this study was the expansion of HSCs together with UCB derived MSCs on a three-dimensional poly L-lactic acid coated with fibronectin.Materials and methods: In this experimental study, after isolation of CD133+ from UCB cells using MACS method, the purity of the isolated cells was carried out by flow cytometry. Abstract

Arizona cypress is a major urban landscape tree many of which have declined in the recent years. Although the cause for this decline is complicated, drought is generally thought to be a leading factor. This study was designed to investigate the effects of artificial inoculation of seedlings of a major urban forest tree, Arizona cypress (Cupressus arizonica Green) with beneficial microorganisms under the water stress. We conducted this research with three factors comprising arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) inoculation with Rhizophagus irregularis or Funneliformis mosseae or a combination of the both fungi species (CF), bacterial inoculation with Pseudomonas fluorescens (PF) and non-inoculated controls, and two levels of irrigation includin

Abstract

Biomaterials in conjunction with stem cell therapy have recently attracted attention as a new therapeutic approach for myocardial infarction (MI), with the aim to solve the delivery challenges that exist with transplanted cells. Self-assembling peptide (SAP) hydrogels comprise a promising class of synthetic biomaterials with cardiac-compatible properties such as mild gelation, injectability, rehealing ability, and potential for sequence modification. Herein, we developed an SAP hydrogel composed of a self-assembling gel-forming core sequence (RADA) modified with SDKP motif with pro-angiogenic and anti-fibrotic activity to be used as a cardioprotective scaffold. The RADA-SDKP hydrogel was intramyocardially injected into the infarct border zo

Abstract

The field of cartilage tissue engineering has been evolved in the last decade and a myriad of scaffolding biomaterials and bioactive agents have been proposed. Controlled release of growth factors encapsulated in the polymeric nanomaterials has been of interest notably for the repair of damaged articular cartilage. Here, we proposed an on-chip hydrodynamic flow focusing microfluidic approach for synthesis of alginate nanogels loaded with the transforming growth factor beta 3 (TGF-β3) through an ionic gelation method in order to achieve precise release profile of these bioactive agents during chondrogenic differentiation of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs). Alginate nanogels with adjustable sizes were synthesized by fine-tuning the flow rate r

Abstract

Human‐induced pluripotent stem cells‐derived hepatocyte‐like cells (hiPSCs‐HLCs) holds considerable promise for future clinical personalized therapy of liver disease. However, the low engraftment of these cells in the damaged liver microenvironment is still an obstacle for potential application. In this study, we explored the effectiveness of decellularized amniotic membrane (dAM) matrices for culturing of iPSCs and promoting their differentiation into HLCs. The DNA content assay and histological evaluation indicated that cellular and nuclear residues were efficiently eliminated and the AM extracellular matrix component was maintained during decelluarization. DAM matrices were developed as three‐dimensional scaffolds and hiPSCs w

Abstract

Electrospun poly (Ɛ-caprolactone) (PCL) has been widely utilized as a biomedical scaffold material to regenerate damaged tissues. However, an electrospun scaffold made from PCL can have some drawbacks such as lack of surface bioactivity, low cell adhesion, as well as osteoinduction, which often make it unsuitable as an implant. Moreover, such a scaffold can produce acidic degradations that cause an inflammatory response at the implantation site. To overcome these negative aspects, composite electrospun nanofiber scaffolds of PCL/oyster shell (OS) were developed in this study. Then, surface morphology and chemistry of the given scaffolds were characterized. As well, tensile strength and surface hydrophilicity were evaluated. Th

Abstract

Glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) is the most aggressive and prevalent form of brain tumor cancers that originate from glial cells. This study proposed to investigate the effect of miR-548x and miR-4698 on the proliferation and the PI3K/AKT signaling pathway in glioblastoma cell lines. The molecular features of glioblastoma were studied using KEGG and TCGA sites. Next, by using miRwalk 2.0 and TargetScan version 7.1, the microRNAs that target critical genes in the PI3k/AKT pathway were selected according to score. The pre-miR-548x and pre-miR-4698 were cloned in a pCDH plasmid to produced lentiviral vector. The expression levels of miR-548x, miR-4698 and target genes were detected by qRT-PCR. The MTT, cell cycle, annexin and colony formation as

Abstract

There is a diverse population of stem cells in human breast milk that can be employed for therapeutic purposes as a reservoir of cells. The current study mainly aimed to determine the nature markers expressing on stem cells. For this aim, the expression of embryonic stem cell markers, as well as the expression of endothelial, mesenchymal, neural, and hematopoietic markers were evaluated by the flow cytometry analysis in fresh colostrum, breast milk, and cultured colostrum samples. The results showed that the embryonic (OCT4, SOX2, HLA-DR), hematopoietic (CD33, CD45, CD117), neural (CD133, Nestin), and mesenchymal (CD44, SCA1) stem cell markers present in colostrum had higher expression in comparison with their counterpart markers in fresh b

Abstract

1 Meta-analysis is known as a statistical analysis that combines the results of multiple scientific studies. Meta-analysis can be performed when there are multiple scientific studies addressing the same question, with each individual study reporting measurements that are expected to have some degree of error (1). The aim then is to use approaches from statistics to derive a pooled estimate closest to the unknown common truth based on how this error is perceived (1, 2). Following the selection of a research topic, researchers need to identify the related literature on the specified subject from all data sources and subsequently extract any evidence from available scientific documents called Systematic Review (SR). The data included can be as

Abstract

Glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) exhibits the most malignant brain tumor with very poor prognosis. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are regulatory factors that can downregulate the expression of multiple genes. Several miRNAs acting as tumor‐suppressor genes have been identified so far. The delivery of miRNA by mesenchymal stem cell (MSC) due to their ability to specifically target tumors is a new, hopeful therapeutic approach for glioblastoma. The objective of our study is the investigation of the effect of lentivirus‐mediated microRNA‐4731 (miR‐4731) genetic manipulated adipose‐derived (AD)‐MSC on GBM. The downregulation of miR‐4731 in human GBM tumor?was detected using the GEO dataset. To evaluate the function of miR‐4731, we overexpress
