    Abstract

Nowadays due to the existence of the economic and geological uncertainties and the increasing use of scenario-based project evaluation in the design of open-pit mines, it is necessary to find an exact algorithm that can determine the ultimate pit limit in a short period of time. Determining the ultimate pit limit is an important optimization problem that is solved to define what will be eventually extracted from the ground, and directly impacts the mining costs, revenue, choosing mining equipment, and approximation of surface infrastructures outside the pit. This problem is solved in order to maximize the non-discounted profit under the precedence relation (access) constraints. In this paper, the Highest-Level Push-Relabel (HI-PR) implement

    Abstract

Truck-Shovel fleet, as the most common transportation system in open-pit mines, has a significant part of mining costs, for which optimal management can lead to substantial cost reductions. Among the available dispatch mathematical models, the multi-stage approach is well suited for allocating trucks to respected shovels in a dynamic dispatching program. However, with this kind of modeling sequencing of the allocated trucks is not possible though it is important to find out the best solution so that getting the minimum accrued cost. To comply with the shortcoming of the traditional model, in this paper, a new hybrid model is developed and applied in Copper Mine of Iran, in which for each truck an allocation matrix is considered as input to

    Abstract

Waste rock dumping is very important in the production planning of open-pit mines. This subject is more crucial when there is a potential of acid-forming (PAF) by waste rocks. In such a type of mines, to protect the environment, the PAF materials should be encapsulated by non-harmful rocks. Therefore, block sequencing of the mined materials should be in such a way that both the environmental and economic considerations are considered. If non-acid forming (NAF) rocks are not mined in a proper time, then a stockpile is required for the NAF materials, which later on would be re-handled for encapsulation of PAF rocks. In the available models, the focus is on either block sequencing or waste dumping strategy. In this work, an attempt has been ma

    Abstract

The mining industry continues to face the problem of depleting grades and the subsequent significant variation in economic, environmental and technological characteristics have been observed. This has raised the importance of the production scheduling process due to its significant role in the profitability and efficiency of any mining operation. Among underground mining methods, sublevel stoping are a commonly used method in large-scale mining. It is a versatile and productive method that is primarily used for steeply deeping orebodies with regular shape, defined ore boundaries and competent ore and host rock. The sequence and extraction of stopes is critical in maximizing profitability, which requires careful consideration over the mine l

Development of a MIP model to maximize NPV and minimize adverse environmental impact—a heuristic approach

    Abstract

Block sequencing is of great importance in an open-pit mining operation. Sequencing is usually performed to maximize the net present value (NPV). Also, from the environmental viewpoint, the sequence of dumping mined materials is of significant value in the sulfide mines. The potential acid-forming (PAF) waste rocks in these mines can seriously damage the environment due to the formation of acid mine drainage (AMD). To prevent the exposition of the PAF materials, it is essential to design suitable block sequencing. For this purpose, encapsulation of the PAF rocks by non-acid forming (NAF) rocks should be considered during waste dumping. However, this method can impose unnecessary re-handling costs. This issue is due to the determination of t

    Abstract

Acid rock drainage (ARD), produced from sulfide-bearing mine waste (e.g., waste rock, tailings) at active and abandoned mine sites, continues to be a global concern due to the significant impacts on water, soil, biodiversity, and the creation of public health risks. Many examples demonstrate that it is technically challenging to control and manage ARD, with common methods including costly additive treatments. Instead, an improved approach to ARD management is to minimize opportunities for generation from the outset. In this paper, a new mixed-integer programming (MIP) model is proposed to optimize the placement of waste rock into waste dumps with the objective of minimizing ARD formation. The MIP model considers the net neutralizing potenti

Optimisation of production planning for an innovative hybrid underground mining method

    Journal PapersResources Policy , Volume 62 , 2019 August 1, {Pages 184-192 }

    Abstract

Conventional underground mining methods rely on extracting a large amount of ore rock from its original place and moving it to surface. An innovative idea of in mine recovery (IMR) has been recently presented by Mining3 to minimise rock movements by recovering low grade ore deposit using in-situ leaching concept. In this paper, the added value of the hybridisation of IMR and a conventional mining method is evaluated through a strategic resource-constrained planning model. The proposed integer programming model simultaneously considers orebody characteristics, mining and leaching capacities, processing requirements and associated mining and processing costs. Results of solving the proposed model for a small-scale orebody, demonstrate that in

    Abstract

This study aims at proposing an innovative technique to reliably characterize the rock masses for differential blast design to optimize rock fragmentation. A few key technologies and approaches for acquiring and delivering the required information for blast design are identified and briefly explained. This study shows that proper design of differential blasting for Grade Engineering? needs accurate information related to the three-dimensional (3D) distribution of Rock Mass Blastability, Grade, and Rock Response Factor. Rock mass blastability represents the dynamic resistance of rock masses to applied blast loads. There is currently no widely-accepted approach for assessing the blastability of rocks. This study indicates that a reliable rock

    Abstract

Objective: The prosthodontic literature has documented the use of cantilever restorations on teeth. The specific guidelines for the use of cantilevers in conventional fixed prosthodontics can be found in traditional prosthodontic text books (Schillenburg, etc). The use of a single cantilevered tooth off of a natural tooth is permitted from a maxillary canine to replace a maxillary lateral incisor. Other cantilevers require either double or triple abutting in order to provide adequate support. The considerations are: The arch, the tooth, the length and diameter of the supporting endosseous implant, the opposing occlusion, the edentulous ridge morphology, soft tissue profiles, the esthetic and overall expectations of the patient. Comparative analysis of three metaheuristics for short-term open pit block sequencing

    Abstract

This paper presents the application of simulated annealing (SA), Tabu search (TS) and hybrid TS–SA to solve a real-world mining optimisation problem called open pit block sequencing (OPBS). The OPBS seeks the optimum extraction sequences under a variety of geological and technical constraints over short-term horizons. As industry-scale OPBS instances are intractable for standard mixed integer programming (MIP) solvers, SA, TS and hybrid TS–SA are developed to solve the OPBS problem. MIP exact solution is also combined with the proposed metaheuristics to polish solutions in feasible neighbourhood moves. Extensive sensitivity analysis is conducted to analyse the characteristics and determine the optimum sets of values of th

    Abstract

Ore grade is the most important source of uncertainty in a mining operation which plays an important role to classify run-of-mine (ROM) material into ore and waste parcels. As a widely used method, kriging estimator is used to estimate the grade of ore blocks. In conventional mining practices, if the estimated grade of a parcel is above the cut-off grade, this parcel is classified as ore, otherwise, is labelled as a waste parcel. An alternative approach is to simultaneously consider the grade of parcels and the economic consequences of sending parcels to destinations by applying simulation-based methods. In this study, kriging and simulation-based methods including loss and profit functions are applied on a real-world case st

    Abstract

This study presents a comprehensive mathematical formulation model for a short-term open-pit mine block sequencing problem, which considers nearly all relevant technical aspects in open-pit mining. The proposed model aims to obtain the optimum extraction sequences of the original-size (smallest) blocks over short time intervals and in the presence of real-life constraints, including precedence relationship, machine capacity, grade requirements, processing demands and stockpile management. A hybrid branch-and-bound and simulated annealing algorithm is developed to solve the problem. Computational experiments show that the proposed methodology is a promising way to provide quantitative recommendations for mine planning and scheduling engineer
